Did you know that our depot is a collection location for recycling electric outdoor power equipment?
Corded and battery-powered electric outdoor power equipment including chain saws, trimmers, stick-edgers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, pressure washers, cultivators, and more can be dropped off for recycling! If it fits in our totes, we can take it. For more details on what is accepted, see the OPEI website. *we may not be able to accept electric ride-own lawn mowers, due to size. Outdoor power equipment that relies on a fuel-powered engine is not included in the program, and we can't accept those items. Our hours are changing! We received a lot of positive feedback around summer trial of Wednesday openings, and we're shifting our schedule year-round.
Starting on Wednesday November 1st 2023, the opening hours of the Mayne Island Recycling Depot will be: Public access: Wednesdays 10am-2pm, Saturdays 10am-4pm Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional: Wednesdays 2pm-3pm CLOSED FRIDAYS See you at the depot! The recycling depot will be closed on Saturday September 30th 2023 in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Responding to high demand for recycling services in the busy summer months, the depot will be open for recycling on Wednesdays from 10am-2pm in July and August 2023.
This is a trial run to see if summer weekday openings will continue in future years, so try it out and let us know what you think! Leave a message or comment on our Facebook page @MayneIslandRecycling, or email mayneislandrecycling1@gmail.com Join the Mayne Island Recycling Society's AGM on Thursday June 8!
Held at the Adachi Pavilion in Dinner Bay. Meeting is 4pm-5pm, with a wine and cheese reception to follow for depot volunteers. Want to volunteer? Contact Kathy at kathykaiser48@gmail.com View or download AGM documents here A big thank you to all beach captains, cleanup teams, recycling depot volunteers, and supporting businesses who took part in the annual beach cleanup! Our beaches are now a lot cleaner. Even mother nature helped out, giving us a break from the rain just in time for the cleanup start on Sunday. 154 volunteers removed over 10 cubic meters (10,000 litres) of material from the beaches, and sorted it at the Mayne Island Recycling depot. New this year: - Thanks to a team of adult and children volunteers organized by the Tsartlip First Nation Stewardship Department, the Helen Point reserve lands were included in the 2023 beach cleanup! - Thanks to a partnership with Ocean Legacy Inc., we are diverting 70% of the material collected from the landfill to their recycling facility near Steveston Harbour in Richmond BC, which specializes in recycling marine debris. The Ocean Legacy team will work to separate and and process the hard plastics from buoys, barrels, buckets, etc. as well as rope and netting, and use their recycling partner Waste Connections for the EPS (styrofoam), as well as Liberty Tire Recyclers via Tire Stewardship BC to recycle the rubber from tires. On Sunday April 23rd 2023 at 11am, the Recycling and Conservancy Societies will host their annual beach clean-up here on Mayne Island. These clean-ups have always been a popular activity, with often a hundred volunteers clearing a ton or more of debris from our beaches. If you would like to join us on April 23rd, contact a captain at one of the phone numbers or email address listed below! And please bring your own gloves and container to collect debris in.
For over two decades the Recycling Society, in partnership with the Mayne Island Conservancy has led an annual one day clean-up of beaches on Mayne Island. Held in the springtime, this massive volunteer effort combs all of our popular beaches, removing the flotsam and jetsam. Typically over a ton of debris is removed, brought to the depot, where it is sorted and weighed, and then trucked off island for disposal. This fun activity not only leaves our beaches beautiful for our residents and visitors, but removes hazardous wastes from the marine environment. Contact a team captain today and join us in the cleanup! |
